This is a primo late 80's show, band firing on all cylinders. I never made Luguna Seca until post Jerry days. A lovely venue. Got to commend the taper
...
on this one, it's top notch quality despite a few muffled spots here & there. I just love the ambiance and spaciousness of a good audience recording, perfect mix, all the instruments are heard clearly. Phil is prominent which I love, and as with late 80's shows Brent is ever present and taking charge more. Jerry just kills it all night long & Bobby is on point shadowing Jerry with those complimentary notes. Great setlist. Stand outs to me are a well played Bird Song....a rocking Hell ina Bucket....Foolish Heart, a lovely later day Jerry tune....a truly melt your face off Other One & Dew is a monster. Nice treat to have David Hidalgo on a few tunes, he kills it. I've listened to this show a bunch, it's top notch 80's Dead.

First of all, the reoording quality is superb. I prefer an AUD like this one to a SBD. It sounds like you're there and you have really good seats.
Then ... there's the performance. I don't know that the Dead got much better in 1988. The show sizzles from start to end with many highlights. A great Bird Song closes out the first set. It's hard to believe Foolish Heart was still in its infancy. It feels like an old classic. The Terrapin will melt your brain. So will the Dew. The Other One is also pretty trippy.

Up there with 6/16/90 for sure as to how Phil's bass shines through. The songs are treated with extra zing- BIrdsong is tremendous- Foolish heart is just
...
starting to feel its oats- the show is played very tightly and is a very good listen- I think this is better than its cousin from two nights before- 7/29/88 gets all the ink for this month end and year- it should not- 7/30 is pretty damn good too

Thanx D. A. & C. I was at this show 20 years ago and don't think I've heard it since. This is a wonderful audience recording despite the occasional
...
crowd conversations. I don't even need to hear the board recording.
The show is pretty even with a fairly basic '88 setlist. David Hildalgo is a nice treat. Start Your Engines was fun to see, but with lyric like the girl in the pinafore dress you can see reasons why for it to have only been played twice. Bird Song is furious at times with Bob playing real fast chord progressions.
The second set is all about The Other One. Not much of a space, but rather a long build into the first verse. You will never complain about a Dew and the Midnight encore was a nice touch. I am playing Terrapin thru Dew (except Drums) on my radio show this week. Peace

Compared to this the board sounds downright insipid. Very punchy, but bright, crystal clear on every instrument and vocal. Even some noticeable separation.
...
Could easily be mistaken for a board or matrix. Well, well done.
